Cover letter 커버레터란?
인사 담당자 등에게 이력서와 함께 동봉하여 보내는 편지

✔️자기소개서의 일종
✔️Cover letter는 일종의 편지이기 때문에 편지의 형식을 띰
✔️정해진 양식이 없음
✔️너무 길지 않고 짧고 간결한 게 특징
✔️주관적인 성향보다 객관적인 사실에 기반하여 작성
✔️분량은 1장 이내로 작성하고, 3개의 문단으로 구성
✔️Times New Roman이나 Arial 같은 전문적인 서체를 선택하고, 가독성을 위해 글자 크기는 12포인트로 설정
✔️본인의 연락처, 수신인의 연락처, 날짜 포함

 

 

이렇게 특징을 봐도 헷갈린다. 여러 블로그를 보면서 내가 정의한 커버레터는 우리나라의 자기소개서와 비슷하지만, 본인의 개인적인 경험이 아닌 업무 적합도를 어필하는 편지에 가깝다고 생각한다. 일례로 내가 한국 디자인 스튜디오에서 팀장으로 일하던 때 받은 자기소개서를 보면 어디에서 태어났고 어떤 학교에 나왔고, 자기는 무엇에 관심이 있고 어떤 디자인을 좋아하고 등의 본인에 관한 이야기를 많이 들어있는 편이었고 개인적인 이야기를 담기 때문에 객관적이기보다는 주관적인 편이었다.

 

하지만 외국계 회사에서 많이 쓰는 커버레터는 이런 본인의 이야기는 많이 들어가지 않는다. 보통 짧은 게 기본이라서 그 안에 내가 어떤 일을 했고 어떤 성과를 냈으며 내가 왜 이 회사에 필요한지를 적극적으로 어필해야 하고 성과위주기 때문에 주관적이기보다 객관적 사실에 근거하여 말해야 한다.

Opening paragraph [서문]

 

처음은 인사말로 시작하는데 인사말의 포인트는 정중함, 지원하는 분야 언급이다. 그리고 만약 인사팀 담당자의 이름을 안다면 첫머리에 이름을 언급해 주자. 조금 더 담당자에게 특별하게 느껴질 cover letter의 시작이 된다.

Relevant qualifications(관련 자격)

업무와 관련된 자격을 적는다. 지원하고자 하는 회사의 설명과 잘 매치되도록 적는 게 중요하다. 자신의 스킬, 숙련도, 받았던 상 등을 적는 것이 좋다.

자신만의 독특한 경험은 다른 지원자와 차별화된 느낌을 줄 수 있다. 스킬을 효과적으로 적용한 프로젝트나 역할에 대해서 설명한다. 단 이 경험은 지원하고자 하는 직장이 원하는 인재상과 어울리는 경험 위주로 적도록 한다. (관련 없는 경험은 빼기)

Closing paragraph [결론]

 

커버레터를 끝내는 클로징 단락에서는 회사의 성공에 어떻게 기여할 수 있을지와 자신의 역할에 대한 열정을 반복한다.  마지막에  "Sincerely,” or “Best regards 다음에 이름을 넣는 것이 적당한 커버레터의 마지막 문장이다.
